Moose Genome Project
Currently I am a PhD student at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. I am studying moose genomics and landscape genetics by focusing on several questions:
1. Where do the two subspecies of moose, Alces alces americana and Alces alces andersoni, meet up within the Great Lakes region of Ontario?
2. What functional gene differences exist between the two subspecies in Ontario, particularly in regards to climate change and disease?
3. What factors have affected genetic variation in Manitoba moose populations, and how might this information be used to prevent further declines both in Manitoba and throughout Canada?

Call for Moose Samples
In 1025-16, I traveled across Ontario to Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters zone meetings. Because this project is genetic in nature, hunter harvest samples comprised the good majority of the samples included in the project overall. We rely heavily on this hunter contribution, and this series of presentations aimed to inform moose hunters and interested parties of the project's preliminary results, future work, and areas that we still needed additional samples from.

If you have a sample from this year or previous years' harvest, please contact me through the "contact" tab, or via email ([email protected]). We are currently seeking samples for the next phase of the project, from all GHAs in Manitoba, to do a temporal study to identify factors influencing moose declines in the province over a 20 year period from 1990-today. Samples can be in many forms, including teeth, ear tips, hide, and muscle tissue. Samples can be placed directly in the tube provided in sample kits and then mailed to the following address:
