This was our very first trip to Bon Echo. I had heard rave reviews about how beautiful the park is, and that was definitely true. However, with these beautiful views came with a price...bugs. I am not one to complain much while hiking. Any time in the woods is a good time to me. But eventually even I broke down after several hours of buzzing, biting, and accidentally eating/breathing in a few. Bugs aside, the hike was nice, and it didn't take us long to get to our campsite on Abes Lake. As soon as we got there we made a nice smoky fire to ward off our unwanted guests, and got to setting up camp. The sites were big, and pretty private, which is always nice. We gathered lots of wood and set to making some dinner (just dehydrated meals, this time). There was a lot of time before dark, so we got plenty of fishing and hammock-ing in. In fact, I lost my favorite lure in those weeds there, so help yourself if you can find it!
We kept the fire rolling all night, but the bugs seemed to calm down a bit as the sun sank in the sky. Just when I had had enough of the bugs and was about to called it a night, Andrew got down on one knee. I, of course, assumed he had stooped down to hug the dog. When he stared at me in the dark for an unusually long time I knew something was up. Finally, he opened the box, which had a light inside, and popped the question! I said yes, and then realized we'd have to now come back to this bug paradise each year to reminisce. We both agreed car camping would suffice for future Bon Echo visits.
It still hadn't hit me on the hike back out, despite the fact that I was wearing far too much bling for the woods, but once we got to the car and told our families and friends, it all became a bit more real. We are very excited to take this next step, and it was in the most perfect way, doing one of my most favorite things. We are planning a late summer wedding for 2017 on Vancouver Island, BC.
