Frontenac was a favorite of mine when I visited last Thanksgiving. So, I decided an impromptu trip back was the perfect solution. We took a slightly different route in than last time, meandering along trails north of Big Salmon Lake towards Devil's Lake. Despite the uncomfortably close proximity of "backcountry" sites at the lake, it was still a nice hike in. It took just under four hours, much less than planned, and was relatively easy overall. The trail takes you over a variety of upland forest and lowland, marshy habitats, where we saw a lot of reptiles and amphibians! We spent two nights at our campsite, and took a day hike around the nearby Hemlock Loop trail. Beautiful hiking more than made up for our camping-naive neighbors. The sandy beach from our site to the lake may have helped a little, too.
